Business Sustainability Conference |
|
Sunday, March 28, 2010 |
|
Lancaster: On Thursday, April 15 from 7:30 am to 4 pm at the Lancaster Host Resort and Conference Center, join The Lancaster Chamber for the inaugural Business Sustainability Conference to learn how people, planet and prosperity can enhance the future of your business. Hear from a global company on how they incorporate sustainable practices, learn the ins and outs of becoming green certified from a panel of local businesses, discuss practical ways you can protect the planet and explore why employee engagement is important for longevity.
Here’s why the Conference is a must attend:
- After breakfast, the Conference will kick off with a presentation from Auntie Anne’s, Inc.’s President and CEO, Sam Beiler, on how Auntie Anne’s works toward becoming a more sustainable business. He will define what it means to cultivate a corporate environment that promotes sustainability in the broadest sense.
- Following the keynote will be a series of four workshops (you pick two) emphasizing how people and planet fit into sustainability. The sessions will focus on a variety of topics ranging from how to improve employee engagement to concrete ways to implement affordable green practices.
- After lunch, in a facilitated discussion, participants in The Chamber’s Green Plus program will share their experiences in achieving certification. The Chamber’s Green Plus program combines online tools with advice from other businesses and universities to help small businesses assess their business performance, as well as their environmental and community stewardship to create sustainability plans. Learn from a panel how you can practically incorporate green best practices into your business.
- Roundtable discussions focused on how sustainability can fit into your company’s business plan and daily routine will finish out a full day of learning and networking. Learn from your peers and expert facilitators as you share ideas and questions surrounding sustainability.
The cost for Chamber members to attend is $125 each; $95 each for 2+ attendees from the same company; and $40 for the luncheon and regional keynote only. The cost for non-members is $250 each and $80 each for the luncheon and regional keynote only. Contact Angi Fritz at 717.397.3531 x 172 or

Green Homes Face a Red Light |
|
Sunday, March 21, 2010 |

New York (article at CNNMoney.com by Les Christie at March 10, 2010): Lots of people, especially those trying to battle high utility bills, believe in energy-efficient homebuilding. But there's something holding green technology back: It simply costs more to include it than it adds to resale value
Appraisals for newly built green homes do not fully reflect the cost of green technology, and the lower appraisal values mean buyers often cannot get the full financing they need from banks. That discourages developers from using green technology, in turn diminishing the market for more green products. "We can't get lenders to appreciate the value, and if we can't get the values recognized, manufacturers can't justify moving these products forward," said Bill Nolan, a Florida home building consultant.
