PPL EnergyPlus Enters Market to Supply Electricity
Sunday, August 16, 2009

Allentown:  PPL EnergyPlus - the energy marketing arm of PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL) - is announcing that it is competing for business as an electricity supplier in the areas served by PPL Electric Utilities.

At the outset, the audience is commercial, industrial and institutional customers of PPL Electric Utilities, said Gene Alessandrini, senior vice president of marketing for PPL EnergyPlus. "Now is an excellent time for businesses to shop for electricity supply because wholesale electricity prices have dropped considerably from their historic high levels last summer," Alessandrini said. "Now customers can find attractive options in the competitive electricity market, especially in light of the estimated increases in rates that will be charged by utilities for ‘default' service to customers who don't shop. We can meet the energy supply needs of businesses and help them with a full range of energy products and services from demand-response programs to energy efficiency improvements," he said.

T. Boone Pickens Speaks at Lancaster Chamber Annual Dinner
Thursday, July 30, 2009
Lancaster: Self-made billionaire oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens was the keynote speaker at the annual dinner for the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce & Industry on Wednesday evening, July 29. The topic was the growing need to move away from our foreign dependence on oil that has us importing nearly 70% of our consumption needs. Pickens spoke of the resources in Pennsylvania in Marcellus Shale that could generate enough natural gas driven energy to reduce our foreign dependence and power our transportation industry.

With 1.6 million members of his New Energy Army, Pickens is beginning to attract the attention of lawmakers both on the state and federal levels. He urges us to invest in solar and wind technology while these gas fields under the Marcellus Shale are tapped into and extracted. More information on his 50 year energy plan can be found at www.pickensplan.com.

Study finds Biomass Electricity more Efficient than Biofuels
Thursday, June 25, 2009

Biomass Renewable EnergyCalifornia's Mercury News reports that "Ethanol from plants can fill up drivers' gas tanks, but people could drive 80 percent farther if we converted those crops into electricity, according to a new study by Stanford and University of California researchers." In terms of converting the plants into energy, the scientists considered conversion "into ethanol through fermentation" and converting the plants into electricity by burning biomass to power electrical generators. The researchers "compared the energy costs and output of the electricity and ethanol produced from the same patch of land," and concluded "that an acre of switchgrass could power a small SUV for 15,000 miles if converted into electricity, but 8,000 miles if turned into ethanol." Biofuel advocates counter that "battery technology is still developing," while ethanol uses technology that "is currently cheaper and more accessible." The researchers conceded "that their calculations do not account for every factor in comparing the two energies."
